Day 1: Auckland - Rotorua (234km, approx 3 hours)
Head east to the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty regions ‘Where the Kiwis go for their own holidays’. Further south the thermal springs of Rotorua are steeped in Maori history and are an iconic destination for any traveller to New Zealand. Pause at Lake Taupo but if you want a trout for your supper then you’ll have to catch it yourself – they don’t sell them in the shops!
Days 2-3: Rotorua - Wellington (462km, approx 5 hours)
Wellington marks the southernmost tip of the North Island and is New Zealand’s capital city, nestling between forested hills and a stunning harbour. Take time out to explore the city.
Day 4: Wellington - Nelson or Blenheim (559km, approx 3.5 hours)
Enjoy the ferry trip across the Cook Strait to Picton on the South Island. Take your pick of where to park up and enjoy the Marlborough region, the heartland of New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc production. Enjoy a chilled glass as you watch the sun set…
Day 5: Nelson or Blenheim - Christchurch (438km, approx 6.5 hours)
Travel to the city of Christchurch, taking time to stop in Kaikoura on the way to see the whales. Christchurch is packed with café culture and a genteel nature amid its grand buildings and English-style gardens. Take time out to explore.
Day 6: Christchurch - Franz Josef or Mount Cook (405km, approz 6 hours)
The Franz Josef Glacier is one of only two in New Zealand that creeps down as far as the lower rainforests, thereby making it the most accessible to visitors for gentle exploration or even a heli-hike. Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain and a spectacular bacdrop to the region's stunning scenery.
Days 7-8: Franz Josef or Mount Cook - Queenstown (404km, approx 6 hours)
The adventure capital of New Zealand, if not the world! The home of bungy jumping, white water rafting, jet boats and ‘zorbing’ but also gentle cruising if you prefer.
Days 9-10: Queenstown
Drive or take a tour to Milford Sound, a place of truly spectacular beauty and home to many Lord of the Rings scenes. Drop off your Maui Motorhome before your departure flight home.
NOTE: Itinerary activities are suggestions only and are at your own expense. The Spirit Grande does not have a toilet or shower on board. Upgrade to a Spirit 2 T/S (with toilet and shower) from £113 per person for bookings between 1 May - 20 June 2010.
